Arkansas’ Ace Is Ready for the Game That Could Decide the Regional
Arkansas held Hunter Dietz back Friday, and now the Razorbacks get their ace for a key winners’ bracket matchup.
Arkansas is turning to its ace on Saturday, and that should make the Razorbacks and their fans confident.
Hunter Dietz is expected to start against Kansas in the winners’ bracket game, giving the Razorbacks the matchup they wanted when they held him back on Friday.
It’s the kind of move that only works if you win the opener, and Arkansas did its part. Now the Hogs get to hand the ball to the guy who has been their tone-setter all season.

Dietz hasn’t pitched since that 105 mph line drive drilled him in the shin at the SEC Tournament.
That moment looked like it could derail everything, but he threw a bullpen Wednesday and checked every box Arkansas needed to see.
“That’s the plan is to pitch him tomorrow night unless something crazy goes on with his leg,” Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn said after the Razorbacks’ win over Missouri State on Friday. “He seems to be feeling good. He’s moving around good and no complaints. I feel like he’s ready to go.”
A rested Dietz is exactly what you want in a game like this. He’s been one of the best pitchers in the SEC all year, carrying a 3.40 ERA and racking up 117 strikeouts in 78.2 innings. Opponents hit just .222 against him.
When he’s right, he doesn’t just give Arkansas a chance. He gives Arkansas an edge.
And that edge matters even more because Kansas already used its best arm.
Dominic Voegele threw Friday to beat Northeastern, which means the Jayhawks will go with Mason Cook on Saturday. Cook is solid with a 4.26 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP, but he’s not Voegele.
Arkansas gets its ace. Kansas does not. In a regional where importance grows with every passing inning, that’s a real advantage.
This is the kind of setup coaches hope for when they map out a weekend.
Win the opener, line up your No. 1 for the biggest game, and put yourself one win away from the final.
Arkansas did the hard part Friday by trusting Gabe Gaeckle and getting through Missouri State. Now the Hogs get to lean on the guy who has carried them all spring.
Dietz has pitched in plenty of big spots already, but this one comes with a little extra weight.
A win puts Arkansas in complete control of the regional. A strong outing from Dietz would also be a reminder that the Hogs still have one of the most reliable arms in the country, even after a scare that could have changed everything.
Saturday is exactly why you save your ace. And Arkansas has the right one ready to go.
