Arkansas’ Season Now Comes Down to Two-Win Sunday

Hunter Dietz struck out 14, but Arkansas couldn’t finish the job against Kansas and now faces a brutal elimination path Sunday.

The difference between winning and losing this time of year comes down to the tiniest decisions and smallest mistakes.

Arkansas had a few of both in Saturday’s 5-3 loss to Kansas in the NCAA Regional, and they added up.

There’s the pair of errors by centerfielder Maika Niu in the third inning that directly led to a run. There’s the hanging breaking ball Hunter Dietz left up that Tyson LeBlanc hammered for a game-tying home run. There’s the choice to let Dietz go back out for the seventh after 102 pitches. And there’s the move to James DeCremer, who didn’t record an out and walked in the go-ahead run.

Flip any one of those moments and maybe the night looks different. But time travel isn’t real and what’s done is done. Now Arkansas has to win twice Sunday just to keep its season alive.

History doesn’t help the mood. The Razorbacks haven’t advanced out of a regional in any of the last nine times they didn’t start 2-0. And the pitching situation Sunday won’t make things easier.

So, what went wrong?

Dietz actually gave Arkansas exactly what it needed. Four runs across six-plus innings isn’t perfect, but 14 strikeouts, two walks, and five hits is the kind of outing you take every time.

The problem was the offense disappearing at the wrong moment.

The bats didn’t just cool off. Arkansas didn’t record a hit and had only one baserunner in the final four innings. That’s going ice cold.

The Razorbacks had only seven baserunners all night and struck out eight times, which isn’t a huge number. Kansas just forced 13 groundouts and kept Arkansas from ever stringing anything together.

Mason Cook gave up most of the early damage. Through 4.2 innings with Arkansas up 3-1, the Razorbacks had every reason to feel good. But Riane Ritter and Boede Rahe shut the door completely.

Now to the decisions

Hindsight always makes everything look simple. It’s easy to say Dietz shouldn’t have gone back out for the seventh, but he had just struck out the side in the sixth. He’d thrown 102 pitches, but he’s gone deeper before.

If there was ever a moment to try to squeeze one more inning out of your ace, this was it. That’s not worthy of any second-guessing.

As for DeCremer, that question will come up in Dave Van Horn’s press conference. But based on the numbers, he’s behind only Ethan McElvain and Steele Eaves in ERA. Both pitched Friday and may not have been available. DeCremer only looks like the wrong choice because of how it played out.

Everything else that happened is just baseball. Fly balls are misjudged. Balls are dropped. Pitches don’t hit their spots.

All of that just happened in the most important game of the season for Arkansas.

Next Up

The stakes Sunday don’t need to be explained. Win and the season continues. Lose and it’s over.

That process begins against Northeastern at noon Sunday. If the Razorbacks win, they’ll face Kansas again at 5 p.m.

That schedule is why Saturday was such an important game. Because, now Arkansas needs two wins in one day against two different teams and its best starters aren’t available.

McElvain and Eaves should both be available, but the elite-level arms available are few for Arkansas. It’ll need the offense to get hot and that’s far from guaranteed to happen.
