Dave Van Horn’s Regional Pitching Plan Makes Sense for Arkansas

Gabe Gaeckle’s recent form gives Arkansas confidence entering its NCAA Regional opener against Missouri State.

Arkansas is making a calculated move by starting Gabe Gaeckle on Friday against Missouri State, and it’s hard to find much downside in the approach.

It lines up the weekend the way the Razorbacks want it, protects their ace and leans into a matchup that already tilts in their favor.

Gaeckle has earned this kind of trust. He’s been sharp since returning to the rotation in early May, and his work in the SEC Tournament was the best he has looked all season. Six scoreless innings, nine strikeouts and a Texas lineup that never really threatened him.

When a pitcher is coming off that kind of outing, you ride the momentum.

“I have confidence in Gabe all the time, no matter what he’s doing, whether he’s starting, relieving, closing,” Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn said. “He’s done it all here and he’s pitched in some big-time games and some big-time leverage situations where we’re talking about advancing to Omaha or a super regional or whatever. He’s been in the middle of it for us.”

It also gives Arkansas something it can benefit from: time.

Hunter Dietz took a 105 mph line drive off his right shin last week, and while he’s expected to pitch this weekend, there’s no reason to rush him into the opener.

“We feel like that anytime we can give Dietz a little more rest after he took that line drive off the leg last week, another 24 hours might be a good thing,” Van Horn said.

Saving Dietz for Saturday sets up a scenario where he’s rested, healthier and facing the regional host. Kansas is using its ace Friday against Northeastern, so Arkansas won’t see him. That’s a small but meaningful advantage, and it only exists if the Razorbacks handle Friday correctly.

This plan also fits the opponent.

Missouri State has seen Arkansas twice already, and the more recent meeting was a 12-4 Razorback win that looked decided long before the final outs. The Bears will throw left-hander Max Knight, who has faced Arkansas twice and allowed five runs, four hits and eight walks in just 2.2 total innings.

That’s a tough history to ignore and not feel a little bit confident about what’ll happen Friday in Lawrence, Kan.

Gaeckle’s numbers back up the confidence. A 6-3 record, a 3.99 ERA and 80 strikeouts in 67.2 innings show a pitcher who can miss bats and work deep enough to stabilize a game. He struck out nine on Opening Day, punched out seven at Kentucky in mid May and tied his season high again last week in Hoover. When he’s right, he gives Arkansas a real edge.

And if he pitches Friday the way he did against Texas, this could tilt quickly.

That’s not hyperbole. That’s simply acknowledging the gap between what Arkansas is capable of and what Missouri State has shown in this matchup.

Starting Gaeckle doesn’t guarantee anything, but it gives Arkansas the cleanest path to 2-0, keeps Dietz on a schedule that makes sense and leans into the strengths of this roster.

In a regional where one decision can shape the whole weekend, this one puts the Razorbacks exactly where they want to be.
