Arkansas Tight End Commit Backs Off Pledge After Oregon Enters the Mix

Arkansas took its first real recruiting hit of the summer on Wednesday when tight end George VanSandt announced he is reopening his recruitment.

The three star from Portland Central Catholic (Ore.) had been committed since mid-April, but his offer from Oregon earlier this month made this feel more like a matter of when than if.

VanSandt said all the right things at the time. He talked about staying committed, talked about looking forward to his official visit, and talked about the relationships he built with the Arkansas staff.

But once the in state Ducks got involved, the momentum shifted. His announcement on Wednesday simply made it official.

“After a great deal of thought and reflection, I have decided to decommit from the University of Arkansas,” VanSandt said via X. “This was not an easy decision. I have a tremendous amount of respect and appreciation for Coach Silverfield, Coach Turner and the entire Arkansas staff for believing in me early and building relationships with me and my family throughout this process. I wish nothing but the best for the Arkansas program moving forward.”

Losing a 6-5, 235 pound tight end who ranks among the top prospects in Oregon is never ideal, but this is the part of the calendar when classes get reshuffled.

New offers go out, official visits get scheduled, and commitments get tested. Arkansas is not the only program dealing with this.

And the Razorbacks didn’t wait long to move forward.

On Monday, they reportedly offered 2027 tight end Parker Keenan out of Clarksville, Tennessee. He’s another three star with size, production and a growing offer list, and he wasted no time locking in an official visit for the weekend of June 12. That’s a strong sign that Arkansas is in a strong spot with him.

So yes, VanSandt’s decision drops the class to eight commitments. But it doesn’t leave Arkansas scrambling.

This is the ebb and flow of recruiting in late May, and the Hogs already have a clear next step lined up.
