Arkansas Gets Major Roster Win With Billy Richmond’s Return
Billy Richmond’s return gives Arkansas a proven SEC defender and makes the Razorbacks look even more like a serious contender.
Arkansas coach John Calipari is getting an important player back for next season.
Multiple reports state that Billy Richmond will be withdrawing from the NBA Draft and return to Arkansas for his junior season.
CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein broke the news, though his initial report had Richmond staying in the draft. Richmond’s agent quickly cleared things up, and Rothstein updated the story to reflect that the Arkansas wing is coming back.

That alone is big news. But when you zoom out and look at what Arkansas is building for next year, Richmond coming back for another year is massively important.
Richmond tested the waters in the NBA Draft, went to the scouting combine, got some realistic draft projections that didn’t show him as a first round draft pick and decided to come back to college.
That isn’t a sign of weakness. That’s a sign of a player who knows he can be better (and get drafted higher) and that he believes Arkansas is the place to do it.
For a player who just had a breakout season, that is a massive win for Calipari and the Razorbacks.
Richmond became one of the best defenders in the SEC last year. He guarded every position, played with toughness and tenacity, and turned himself into the kind of player coaches trust in every situation.
Arkansas’ Billy Richmond III just shot 17/25 on the 3-point star drill.
He’s now tied for sixth so far for the NBA Combine. The leader, Kingston Flemings, shot 19/25.

Another year gives him a chance to sharpen the offensive side of his game or double down and become the best defender in college basketball. Arkansas will take either version.
And now the Razorbacks get to pair him with one of the most talented freshman groups the program has signed in years.
JJ Andrews and Abdou Toure are both good enough to play right away. Jordan Smith Jr. is expected to run the point from day one. Georgia transfer Jeremiah Wilkinson gives them scoring in the backcourt.
And all of this is happening before anyone knows what Meleek Thomas is going to do with his draft decision.
That is a lot of talent. That is a lot of lineup flexibility. And that is the kind of roster that can make a run in March.
Richmond returning gives Arkansas something every good team needs: a proven player who has already done it at this level. Someone who knows the system, knows the expectations and knows what it takes to win in the SEC.
Combine that with the incoming players, and the Razorbacks look a whole lot more like a serious championship contender.
There is still plenty to sort out, but this much is clear. Richmond coming back is the kind of news that can change the shape of a season.
For Arkansas, it turns a roster that looked kind of like a title contender into one even a blind person could see is a real threat.
No matter how the rest of the summer plays out, this is a great day for Arkansas basketball.
