SEC Roll Call chaos leaves Arkansas’ Vanderbilt win in background
Upsets shook the top 10 while the Razorbacks quietly won on the road at Vanderbilt. Matt Mitchell’s skit noticed anyway.
The Arkansas Razorbacks won an SEC game on Saturday. If you missed it, you weren’t alone.
Matt Mitchell built a whole bit around that idea in his latest SEC Roll Call chaos video.
The Hogs went into Nashville and beat Vanderbilt on the road. Any other weekend, folks around Fayetteville would’ve been talking about it through Wednesday.
But the top of the national rankings started falling apart, and a win over the Commodores didn’t stand much of a chance at grabbing headlines.
Mitchell’s skit leans right into it. One voice announces, “Oh, we won an SEC game.”
A little later, there’s a brag about beating a ranked team by four touchdowns, followed by “If anybody cares.”
Another voice answers that it would rather they didn’t.
Upsets hit the top of the rankings
Most of the attention went to the top 10.
For the second straight week, an unranked team took down No. 1. According to the video, the last time that happened was 36 years ago.
Alabama lost again. That’s back-to-back regular-season losses for the Crimson Tide, something that hadn’t happened since 2007.
Kalen DeBoer gets blamed in the skit for leaving folks wailing on the floor.
Somebody else claims they’re now the proud owner of the entire state of Alabama. I’d guess that line didn’t go over well in Tuscaloosa.
Texas went down on the road against a team playing a 19-year-old freshman backup quarterback.
The video isn’t real impressed with that, though. It says the Longhorns’ offense runs about as smoothly as a Whataburger drive-thru after midnight.
Kentucky climbs while nobody runs the show
Kentucky gets in on the fun. The blue bloods have fallen, the skit says, so the Bluegrass is sitting on top.
Another character asks if they and Vandy have to do all the work around here.
As for who’s running things, nobody seems to know. “Does it look like we have any idea what we’re doing right now?” one asks.
Apparently, unranked teams had strict orders to quit winning. Nobody followed them.
Somebody even rewrites scripture: “The meek shall inherit the SEC.”
The league office isn’t much help. One character really wants to yell at a commissioner and can’t find one anywhere.
Notre Dame and the playoff talk
Next, a leprechaun shows up smiling. It’s not hard to figure out which school that’s about.
Someone asks where the complaint forms are kept. “I got about $30 million worth of offense I’d like to return.”
From there, the conversation shifts to a proposal that would grow the College Football Playoff from 12 teams to 24.
The characters figure that’d fill the bracket with two-loss teams. There’s even worry it could take away conference title games.
One of them says a 24-team field would make this past weekend feel a lot less special.
So they settle on a plan. They’ll stir up as much chaos as they can, partly as payback for losing the BCS.
What it means for the Razorbacks
Arkansas fans could be forgiven for feeling a little ignored right now.
The Razorbacks went on the road in conference play and came home with a win.
Nationally, the focus was on Alabama, Texas and whoever was ranked No. 1 at kickoff.
That “If anybody cares” line in the skit fits where the Hogs stood in the national conversation this week.
The standings don’t care who was watching. A road SEC win counts the same either way.
With this much chaos going on, Arkansas can stack up a few more of those without anybody paying much attention.
