SEC’s new pro player ban carries big penalties for coaches

The SEC isn’t messing around anymore.

League presidents and chancellors voted 15-0 to lock in stiff penalties for any school that tries to bring an NFL, NBA or WNBA player back onto a college roster.

LSU sat out of that vote, but every other member backed it.

Arkansas falls under this same rulebook now, along with every other program in the league.

The Razorbacks aren’t tangled up in any of these cases, but the Hogs still have to follow whatever rule the conference sets for everybody else.

The penalties aren’t small either. A head coach who breaks the rule faces a suspension covering half the season.

The school also loses its voting rights on conference business and gets hit with a fine that can reach 50% of that sport’s yearly budget.

Commissioner Greg Sankey can still pile on more punishment if he wants.

This whole mess started because of a handful of players who got cut by NFL teams and then looked for a way back into college ball.

The players who started it all

LSU is right in the middle of it. Former Cleveland tight end Dae’Quan Wright cleared NFL waivers and joined the Tigers under coach Lane Kiffin, who also coached him back at Ole Miss.

Defensive tackle Zxavian Harris took the same path after getting waived by New Orleans, and he played for Kiffin at Ole Miss too.

LSU also picked up former Notre Dame pass rusher Junior Tuihalamaka after the NCAA handed him another year of eligibility.

Over at Texas, offensive lineman Cole Hutson joined the Longhorns after taking part in NFL minicamps without ever signing a contract, using a lawsuit to clear his path.

Kiffin doesn’t sound like he’s backing off. He said the players will “recruit them like probably most people are,” pointing out that if his program doesn’t take these guys, some other school will.

Not everyone is thrilled about any of this. Rams coach Sean McVay didn’t hide his confusion, saying he “felt like he took a freakin’ gummy” when he first heard a Browns player was heading to LSU instead of staying in the league.

The NFL adds its own rule

The NFL isn’t sitting back and watching either.

The league told its 32 teams that a trip back to campus this fall closes the door on signing anywhere in the NFL until 2027.

Getting cut after signing turns a player into a free agent for good — no future draft rights — and from there his options are wide open, whether that’s catching on with a different roster, testing the CFL or heading back to a campus.

An attorney representing several of these players pushed back hard on the SEC’s move, saying the conference’s actions put the NCAA “in contempt of multiple court orders.”

That lawsuit angle isn’t going away soon, and it’s likely more schools across the Southeast will get pulled into this fight before the season even kicks off.

For now, the conference has made its stance clear and coaches know exactly what’s on the line if they try to test it.
