Tampa isn’t exactly Fayetteville, but Ryan Silverfield still had to answer Thursday for what’s happened back home.
The Hogs have lost 10 games twice and finished 2-10 three separate times over the past nine seasons, and that kind of record doesn’t stay quiet just because you’re 900 miles away at SEC Media Days.
Reporters wanted answers. Silverfield gave them a pitch instead.
He didn’t bring up the athletic director is the only constant in those nine seasons and he hired Silverfield.
Evem after firing the only other head coach he’d hired, then the AD said that coach didn’t have the resources necessary to win.
Nobody thought to mention the athletic director is responsible for that.
Ready to turn the page
His approach on Wednesday and Thursday stayed consistent, no matter who asked or how the question came at him.
The past, in his words, isn’t the point anymore.
“I’ve got so much respect for the history of Arkansas football, but the recent struggles have nothing to do with us moving forward,” Silverfield said Wednesday night. “That’s in the rearview mirror. We’re looking forward.”
It’s an easy thing to say from a podium.
Whether it holds up once the season starts is a different question, one nobody can answer in July.
Fans have earned their skepticism
Arkansas hasn’t finished with fewer than six losses more than once in 10 seasons, and the exception, 2021, feels like a long time ago now.
A double-digit winning season hasn’t happened since 2011, which means there are probably some Razorback students on campus this fall who weren’t alive the last time it did.
Four coaches have come and gone trying to solve it. None of them fixed it.
That history is exactly why some fans aren’t ready to buy into rearview-mirror talk just yet, even from a coach who seems to mean it.
Silverfield addressed that skepticism head-on when asked about his biggest obstacle in Fayetteville.
“The biggest thing right now is people want to continue to talk about what occurred in recent history,” he said. “We want to talk about the history of Arkansas. Let’s talk about Darren McFadden, right? Let’s talk about the ’64 national championship team.
“It’s our job as a staff and as a program where this time sitting here next year, we’re not talking about negative results from the year before.”
NIL money hasn’t matched the market
One thing working in Arkansas’s favor is location. Northwest Arkansas is home to Walmart, Tyson Foods and J.B. Hunt, three companies with more money than most SEC boosters could dream of.
The Razorbacks were slow to lean into NIL when it first hit college football, and that hesitation showed up right after the program’s 9-4 season in 2021, a moment that could’ve been used to build momentum instead of losing it.
Silverfield says fixing that starts with him showing up and asking.
“You talk about the resources in Northwest Arkansas,” he said Thursday. “All these great resources that a lot of these other SEC towns may not have, and we’re so fortunate. We’ve had the backing of so many things.
“You talk about the growth of Seven Brew, all these other places. Man, how do we use that in our unique region in order to continue to set us up for success on the football field?”
What optimism can actually buy you
None of this guarantees wins.
Good intentions don’t beat SEC defenses, and a coach’s SEC Media Days message doesn’t erase three losing seasons on paper.
What Silverfield can offer right now is something smaller but still worth something. It’s a reason for Razorback fans to show up in September without dreading the outcome before kickoff.
That opener comes Sept. 5 against North Alabama, with kickoff set for 3:15 p.m. on SEC Network. It won’t answer every question about this program.
For a fan base that’s spent nine years bracing for the worst, a coach who’s at least trying to sell them on hope might be exactly the shift in tone Arkansas needed heading into 2026.
