Arkansas just got some good news a year early. Guard commit Davion Thompson is reclassifying to join the Razorbacks roster for the 2026-27 season instead of waiting until 2027.

He made the move official Friday night.

Thompson picked the Hogs on June 10. He passed on offers from Vanderbilt, Michigan and Baylor to join coach John Calipari’s program.

The switch bumps Thompson out of the 2027 class and into the 2026 group.

That means he skips the rest of his high school career and will play for the Razorbacks this season instead of next year.

Recruiting services rank him among the top point guards in the country.

He’s the No. 21 overall prospect and the No. 5 point guard in the 2027 class according to 247Sports’ composite rankings. On3 had him at No. 23 overall before he moved classes.

Thompson stands 6-foot-2 and weighs 185 pounds. He plays his prep ball at Link Academy in Branson, Missouri.

Calipari made the trip to Mexico

Calipari didn’t just recruit from home. The Arkansas coach flew to Leon, Mexico, this summer to watch Thompson suit up for Team USA at the FIBA U18 AmeriCup.

He was the only college coach in the building that day, a source confirmed.

Team USA blew past Argentina 88-58 in that game, and Thompson scored 11 points off the bench.

In the tournament final against Canada, he added five points in 14 minutes, but Team USA fell 67-65 and settled for silver.

Thompson has also lit up the Nike EYBL circuit with his Meanstreets team this spring.

He’s averaging 21.7 points a game to go with 4.4 rebounds and 3.9 assists, and he’s hitting more than half of his three-point tries.

247Sports recruiting analyst Adam Finkelstein watched Thompson play in Memphis and liked what he saw, saying Thompson “dictated his own pace off the dribble” and showed strong footwork getting into the lane.

Thompson becomes the fifth five-star signee Calipari has landed for the 2026 class, joining Jordan Smith Jr., Abdou Toure, JJ Andrews and Miikka Muurinen.

Fellow commit Caleb Ourigou is also expected to reclassify, which would give Arkansas a full 15-man roster.

The Razorbacks now have another ready-made scorer, and Hogs fans won’t have to wait a full year to watch Thompson play in Bud Walton Arena.

Key takeaways

  • Davion Thompson is reclassifying from the 2027 class to 2026 and will play for Arkansas this season instead of waiting a year.
  • Calipari flew to Mexico to scout Thompson at the FIBA U18 AmeriCup and was the only college coach who attended that game.
  • Thompson becomes the fifth five-star signee in Calipari’s 2026 class, and fellow commit Caleb Ourigou may also reclassify to fill out a 15-man roster.
