Arkansas to play Virginia in first-ever Washington D.C. matchup
The Razorbacks head to Washington D.C. for a first-ever program matchup against Virginia, with a D.C. native leading the way.
Arkansas basketball just got a date circled on the calendar.
The Razorbacks will travel to Washington D.C. this fall to face Virginia in the Capital Showcase, marking the first time the program has ever played a game in the nation’s capital.
The Gazelle Group made the announcement, and a lot of Hogs fans already have the date locked in.
The game tips off Nov. 8, a Sunday, at Capital One Arena. Fans can catch the action at noon, which is noon back home in Arkansas.
ESPN will carry the broadcast, so anyone who can’t make the trip east will still get a good look at this new matchup.
Tickets aren’t on sale to the general public just yet. That window opens Sept. 4. Fans who want first crack at seats can sign up for early access through email updates before the public sale begins.
A D.C. native comes home
While the program has never played in Washington, one Razorback knows the city well.
Freshman Jordan Smith Jr. grew up in the D.C. area, and he’s no stranger to big moments on that stage.
Smith enters this season as the 2026 consensus National High School Player of the Year.
He led Paul VI Catholic High School to a pair of MaxPreps national championships before signing with Arkansas, so this trip doubles as something of a homecoming for the young guard.
Both programs bring plenty of momentum into the matchup.
Virginia went 30-6 last season, finished second in the ACC at 15-3 and made the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Arkansas wasn’t far behind, going 28-9, winning the SEC Tournament title and reaching the Sweet 16 for a second straight year.
The history between these two programs runs deep, even if it’s been dormant for decades.
Arkansas holds a 3-4 record all-time against Virginia, and every single meeting between the two schools happened between 1984 and 1998.
Virginia actually won the first three matchups in the series.
Since then, the Razorbacks have flipped the script, winning three of the last four meetings, including a memorable Elite Eight win over the Cavaliers in 1995 in Kansas City that sent Arkansas deeper into March Madness.
Coach Cal’s history with the Cavaliers
Head coach John Calipari has his own history with Virginia, though it isn’t a happy one.
Coach Cal is 0-1 all-time against the Cavaliers, a mark that dates back to his UMass days, when his team fell to Virginia in the second round of the 1993 NCAA Tournament in Syracuse.
This trip also marks new ground for Coach Cal in a familiar city.
It’ll be the first time he’s brought one of his college teams to Washington, D.C., since the 2008-09 season, when his Memphis Tigers dropped an overtime game to Georgetown at the same arena, then known as the Verizon Center.
Coach Cal actually has plenty of history playing in D.C. overall.
His UMass squads faced George Washington every year as Atlantic 10 rivals from 1988-89 through 1995-96, with those games played at the Revolutionaries’ Charles E. Smith Center.
The Minutemen struggled on that floor, going just 1-6 during the Calipari era.
For Arkansas, this Capital Showcase trip offers a fresh chapter in a series that’s been on pause since the late 1990s.
With Smith returning to his hometown and Coach Cal chasing his first win over Virginia, the Hogs have a lot riding on this Nov. 8 date in the nation’s capital.
