Arkansas closer Ethan McElvain goes to Royals in round five
Ethan McElvain becomes the sixth Razorback picked as Kansas City grabs the lefty reliever in round five.
Arkansas left-hander Ethan McElvain heard his name called by the Kansas City Royals in the fifth round of the MLB Draft. Kansas City grabbed him with the 151st overall pick on Saturday.
He’s the sixth Razorback to come off the board this year.
McElvain spent just one season in Fayetteville after transferring from Vanderbilt. He didn’t waste any time making an impact.
The southpaw turned into one of the most trusted arms in the Arkansas bullpen and closed out games all spring.
He finished with a perfect 6-0 record and a 1.88 ERA in 20 appearances. McElvain struck out 55 batters in 38 1/3 innings while walking just 13. Hitters managed only a .182 average against him all season.
Bullpen work carried the Hogs
McElvain led Arkansas with six saves and did most of his damage as a reliever.
In 19 relief outings he went 6-0 with a 1.03 ERA and struck out 52 hitters across 35 innings. Opponents hit just .163 against him when he came out of the pen.
He kept that form going once SEC play started. Across 11 conference appearances he posted a 3-0 record with a 1.86 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 19 1/3 innings.
He picked up four saves during league play and held hitters to a .189 average.
Some of his best work came late in the year.
He struck out seven batters against Kentucky on May 15 then threw 4 1/3 shutout innings with six strikeouts against Auburn in the SEC Tournament on May 23.
A big year for Arkansas arms
McElvain earned All-SEC Second Team honors and picked up multiple All-American nods for his work on the mound.
He was also a finalist for the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award, which goes to the top relief pitcher in the country.
Before landing in Fayetteville, McElvain was a top-100 recruit coming out of high school. He spent two seasons at Vanderbilt but didn’t fully break through until he transferred to Arkansas.
A fresh start under the Hogs pitching staff helped him lock down his command and turn into a shutdown option late in games.
Kansas City has now taken a fifth-round arm from Arkansas in back-to-back years after selecting right-hander Aiden Jimenez in 2025.
McElvain becomes the next Razorback pitcher the organization will look to develop as he begins his pro career.
