Calipari: Randle text sparked Razorbacks reset against Gamecocks

Calipari says a text from Julius Randle lit a reset for the Razorbacks as they stormed past the Gamecocks after a tough Auburn loss.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Funny how a little digital encouragement can change the mood in a locker room—or at least it did for Arkansas this week.

After an “I guess we forgot how to play” loss to Auburn, the Hogs pulled out their phones and got a pep talk.

Not from some guru with a motivational poster background, but from Julius Randle.

Calipari, who’s been around enough hardwood floors to wallpaper a senior-living rec room, took to the podium after Arkansas’ 108–74 win over the South Carolina Gamecocks and dropped this gem:

“Today, Julius Randle texted me and said, ‘I really love your team,’” Calipari said later. “I said, ‘Did you watch the last game?’ He said, ‘It doesn’t matter.’”

That’s right — Randle, the NBA veteran with a soft spot for his old coach, sent a little “you’ve got this” message that apparently did more than a dozen practice hours could.

Like many slightly older coaches, Calipari manages his teams with clipboard wisdom, old-school toughness, and every now and then with a text on his lock screen.

So did that four-word love note flip a switch for the Razorbacks? That’s up for debate. But the scoreboard sure looked brighter than a Bud Walton Arena jumbotron on Wednesday night.

Razorbacks reset after Auburn

Let’s not sugarcoat it: Arkansas looked like a team that had lost its rhythm in that Auburn game.

They seemed to have wandered out of a timeout and right into a time warp, cueing mistakes and half-effort defense. Calipari didn’t exactly say they played like goats, but he didn’t have to.

Then comes South Carolina. The Gamecocks showed up to Bud Walton Arena with confidence that they could hang, maybe even steal a road win.

Instead, they got Arkansas firing on all cylinders.

Whether it was Randle’s note or Calipari’s patented halftime pep talk (which reportedly included several references to “effort” and “reset”), the Razorbacks flipped the script and dominated both ends of the floor.

They looked like the team fans thought they might be at the start of the season — which tells you the Auburn performance really was that bad.

Calipari, who’s had decades to craft a coach’s poker face, added a bit more after the win:

“It’s amazing, I’ve had more people tell me, ‘I love your team.’ Today, Julius Randle texted me… Different people are calling me about this group and saying you have a lot of pieces.”

Oh yeah, he name-dropped. That’s part of his charm — calls and texts and fans weighing in like they’re coaching from the stands.

But Calipari wasn’t complaining. He just might’ve been having a little fun with how he framed it.

Whoever showed up, scored

The freshmen guards — Darius Acuff and Meleek Thomas — looked like they were auditioning for roles in “The Razorbacks’ Next Big Thing.”

They led the charge without needing a Randle text of their own.

Meanwhile veteran players showed up, too. It’s always nice when both ends of your roster remember which game they’re playing — you know, offense and defense.

That’s the kind of thing that leads to a 108-point night.

Calipari also took a moment to send some friendly advice to South Carolina coach Lamont Paris, suggesting they “burn the tape” of their respective Auburn hangovers.

That’s coach-speak for “forget that mess and let’s get to the next one,” which is just about the most polite way you can say “walk it off.”

Pringle’s quiet night but not so quiet impact

One subplot from the game was Arkansas’ transfer big man Nick Pringle — a former Gamecock — showing some signs of life.

Calipari checked on him personally after the game. The coach doesn’t exactly whisper sweet nothings, but he did make sure Pringle was mentally right after his performance.

That’s coach care — awkward hugs and all.

Pringle finished with 15 points, seven rebounds, and a few other box score letters you’d want from your frontcourt player.

Calipari was quick to note that getting his motor going was “the job” moving forward.

Back to business

All sarcasm aside, Arkansas got the message — coaching staff, freshmen, veterans, and apparently a retired Kentucky star with an iPhone.

Whether it was the Randle text, corrected effort, or just remembering how to play defense, the Razorbacks walked into Wednesday night’s game looking like a fresh cup of coffee compared to their Auburn hangover.

If Wednesday was a reset button, then maybe Calipari was right to let Randle’s message stick around a bit.

After all, in coaching, as in life, sometimes a few kind words — even via text — are the best timeout you can get.
