Ryan Silverfield’s Utah test looms after a shaky Arkansas opener

The Razorbacks have been here before. Not literally, but close enough.

Coaches at Fayetteville have opened seasons looking rough and still found a way to turn things around the very next week.

Back in 2020, Sam Pittman’s first game as head coach ended in a 37-10 loss to Georgia. Nobody was thrilled.

The Hogs took that same script to Starkville a week later and knocked off Mississippi State for their first SEC win in three years.

Go back further to 2016 and the pattern repeats itself.

Arkansas barely survived a 21-20 opener against Louisiana Tech, then turned around and knocked off 15th-ranked TCU in a wild 41-38 double overtime game in Fort Worth.

History says a bad opener doesn’t have to mean a bad season.

It also doesn’t guarantee anything gets better on command, which is exactly the spot Ryan Silverfield finds himself in this week.

Utah isn’t slowing down for anybody

Whatever confidence a comeback story is supposed to build gets a lot harder against a team playing this well right now.

Utah didn’t have any trouble in its own opener either, rolling past Idaho by a 66-14 score that made the Razorbacks’ struggles look even worse by comparison.

That gap matters heading into Saturday. Utah sits ranked twentieth in the country and gets to host this one at Rice-Eccles Stadium in front of its own crowd.

Road trips against ranked teams don’t usually get easier just because a team needs a confidence boost.

The Hogs last beat a Power Four opponent in Week 2 back in 2022 against South Carolina, and outside of the pandemic era, that TCU comeback 10 years back is still the only Week 2 road win on the books.

Those numbers aren’t good. They’re also exactly the kind of numbers a coach can flip with one gritty performance.

Why fans are still nervous

None of that history matters much if Arkansas plays like it did in Week 1.

The Razorbacks beat North Alabama 31-14, but a win over an FCS opponent shouldn’t have felt this shaky. Penalties piled up. The offense looked lost at times.

Silverfield didn’t dodge any of it either. He called the performance “no excuse for the way we played” and pointed to communication issues and rookie jitters as the root cause.

He pointed out it was the first time this exact roster and staff had ever taken the field together.

He wants his team “tremendously better” this week than it was last week. That’s a fair ask.

It’s also a big jump to make against a ranked opponent on the road in one week’s time.

Brutal stretch with no room to hide

A win on Saturday wouldn’t erase a shaky opener but it would go a long way toward calming things down.

It sure would take some heat off Silverfield with a fan base that’s already impatient.

The scoreboard doesn’t care what happened last Saturday though. The Hogs start at 0-0 either way, and Saturday is where all that history and all that pressure actually gets tested instead of just talked about.
