Smith carries weight of No. 5 as Arkansas builds ground game

Wearing the number five at Arkansas means something different than it does anywhere else in college football.

That number belonged to Darren McFadden, the man most Hog fans still call the greatest running back the program has ever had.

This fall it belongs to a transfer who spent last season 140 miles up the road in Memphis.

Sutton Smith knows exactly what he stepped into when he picked up that jersey. He didn’t shy away from it at SEC Media Days in Tampa, Fla., where he talked openly about studying the tape of the Arkansas legend he now shares a number with.

“I always knew he was a beast but, man, he’s really the GOAT,” Smith said. “He’s really the GOAT of Arkansas football history among the running backs. It’s an honor to wear that five. I look forward to meeting him.”

Smith is a Powder Springs, Georgia native who followed head coach Ryan Silverfield from Memphis to Fayetteville this offseason. Once he committed, he said he went straight to the film room to break down what made McFadden so hard to stop.

“When I committed to Arkansas, I got the chance to really look into his film,” Smith said. “He’s a freak. Like, 6-foot-3, ran a 4.3 (40-yard dash). So I just take some things from his game and try to put it into mine and see why I could be successful.”

Arkansas building depth in the backfield

Ask D-Mac and he will tell you straight up a lot of the credit for what he did was the people he had around him on those teams. Their backups were probably better than anybody on the current Razorbacks’ roster.

Smith likely won’t have that kind of support. There is nothing that we’ve seen in spring that makes that even a realistic hope right now.

Along with the number comes a patch worn on the jersey to honor McFadden, a tradition the program started last year when his number was first retired for special recognition. Smith says he doesn’t take any of it lightly.

“It’s a good thing I’m able to wear that number five and I want to represent it the right way, own the ball and do good for the Hogs,” he said.

Smith isn’t walking into an empty depth chart either.

The Razorbacks are counting on him and returning back Braylen Russell to shoulder most of the workload after Arkansas finished with the second-best rushing attack in the SEC a year ago. They averaged 192 yards a game and 5.7 yards per carry across 12 contests.

Russell and Smith lead a deep backfield

That production last season came largely from quarterback Taylen Green and running back Mike Washington Jr., both of whom are now off to the NFL. Silverfield sounds unbothered by the turnover.

“I’ve got great faith in our running backs,” Silverfield said from the podium at SEC Media Days on Thursday. “I’ll say this: we have a ton of depth in our running back room … there’s a slew of other guys that are stepping up that we have high expectations for.”

Smith and Russell combined for 955 yards and 12 touchdowns between their previous stops last season and bring different styles to the Hogs’ offense.

Russell runs downhill and finishes runs through contact while Smith is quicker in space and dangerous catching passes or working special teams.

“I take pride in adding special teams value and being used in a variety of ways,” Smith said. “I know coach (Tim Cramsey) and his offensive scheme will help me play to my strengths, whether that’s catching passes out of the backfield, being split out wide, catching punts, tracking punts down, protecting the quarterback. I take pride in that.”

Cam Settles, Michigan transfer Jasper Parker, incoming freshman TJ Hodges and Markeylin Batton round out a running back room that Arkansas believes has real depth heading into fall camp.

Offensive line looks to pave the way

None of that ground production matters much without blocking up front and the Razorbacks return a solid core there too.

Redshirt senior center Caden Kitler, junior right guard Kobe Branham and left tackle Kavion Broussard are all back, joined by newcomers Malachi Breland from Memphis and Bryant Williams from Louisiana.

“I have great faith in our offensive line,” Silverfield said. “I believe sitting here today we have seven or eight offensive linemen that can play at a high level in the SEC.

“It’s our job to continue to develop the rest of that group and get them along, but I’ve got confidence in this offensive line.”

He pretty much has to say that. Kitler said the group has made its identity a point of emphasis heading into the season.

Nobody’s questioning their effort or desire. We haven’t seen anything yet to start making a bunch of bold predictions.

“Something big we focused on in the offseason is our identity as an offensive line,” Kitler said. “We’re going to smash some peoples’ faces in. That’s going to be our identity.

“When it comes to 3rd-and-short we’re going to be able to get the first down on the ground.”

Arkansas opens fall camp at the start of August before kicking off the season against North Alabama on Sept. 5 at Razorback Stadium.
