FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders is urging the University of Arkansas and Arkansas State to make their in-state football matchup a yearly date in Little Rock.

It’s probably a political ask (to get some votes) that collides with the athletic department math of revenue, recruiting exposure and venue logistics.

“Ensure this game is not a one-time event, but the beginning of a lasting tradition,” Sanders wrote in a letter to both boards of trustees published by.

The call came after Arkansas handled Arkansas State 56–14 on Sept. 6 at War Memorial Stadium before an announced 54,224, with coverage on ESPN+/SECN+.

The meeting was the first between the programs and the latest in the Razorbacks’ intermittent series of Little Rock appearances. This will likely be the last because it’s not a stadium that can handle modern requirements for a game.

Political pressure meets athletic math

Local analysis has argued an annual game in Little Rock would be a net negative for the Razorbacks, citing reduced ticket yield and premium revenue compared with Fayetteville, plus fewer chances to host blue-chip recruits on campus game days.

Hogs on SI on the Sports Illustrated Network’s site framed the governor’s demand as counterproductive to program goals.

Athletic director Hunter Yurachek has indicated that future War Memorial dates are squeezed by the SEC’s move to a nine-game league schedule beginning in 2026 and corresponding nonconference adjustments.

He left a narrow door open for occasional returns but emphasized the complications that come with a fuller SEC slate and scheduling coverage. National outlets have likewise detailed the 2026 format change and its ripple effects.

Game-day strain reappears in Little Rock

While Saturday’s crowd filled the old bowl, long-running stadium issues resurfaced. Best of Arkansas Sports reported internet outages in the press box for much of the first half and heavy traffic around the venue that delayed arrivals. Those hiccups echoed prior concerns about utilities and broadcast reliability at War Memorial.

The governor’s letter sought to anchor the game to tradition and statewide interest. “This matchup … has brought Arkansans together,” Sanders wrote, pressing trustees at both institutions to formalize an annual series at War Memorial.

Coaches, competition and exposure

On the field, the gap between an SEC roster and a Sun Belt roster was apparent. Arkansas State acknowledged as much in its recap of the 56–14 loss, noting the Red Wolves “fell behind early and could not recover” against the Razorbacks in Little Rock (A-State athletics).

For Arkansas, an annual in-state date would occupy one of four nonconference slots in most seasons. That’s now tighter real estate with the SEC expansion and would likely remain on streaming rather than a marquee linear TV window, as was the case Saturday .

From a recruiting standpoint, on-campus Saturdays matter. Programs prefer to pair official and unofficial visits with high-profile home games for maximum exposure.

Shifting a September weekend off campus removes that advantage and shifts premium seating and donor-hospitality inventory away from Fayetteville.

What’s next?

Attendance and novelty will strengthen proponents’ arguments, but one sellout does not guarantee a sustainable annual event, particularly as schedules densify in 2026. For now, there are no additional War Memorial dates on Arkansas’ public football schedules, and the board-level discussion remains unsettled. The governor’s push sets up a straightforward test: whether a symbolic statewide showcase can overcome the practical imperatives of budgets, recruiting and television.
